Interest in ethanol for maritime transportation grows, report says

- There is increasing interest from developers of engines for vessels about using ethanol as a drop-in fuel, said a report from Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping published on Thursday.

  • The report said ethanol could be used on vessels that already have engines able to use methanol.

  • "Multiple studies and announcements indicate that fuel systems designed for methanol can be successfully recalibrated to combust ethanol."

  • The report said that remaining challenges for broader ethanol use relate mainly to "optimization, validation, and certification."

  • The US is the world's largest producer of ethanol. Brazil is the second-largest.

  • Ethanol producers see the use of the fuel in the maritime industry as an alternative for future demand growth.

  • "This new report from one of the world's leading marine industry research institutes shows the tremendous potential for using ethanol in the maritime shipping sector," said Geoff Cooper, CEO of the US Renewable Fuels Association.
